Posted on 6/20/2022 by Dr McMurray
What is oral maxillofacial surgeryOral maxillofacial surgery encompasses surgical operations executed by highly trained dental experts. Maxillofacial surgeries help treat diseases, cure injuries, correct deformities and malocclusions and achieve an aesthetic look. The disorders treated through the surgery affect the mouth, neck, maxilla region, face and head. OMS is often regarded as the bridge between surgery and dentistry.

Scope of oral maxillofacial surgery

OMS surgery focuses solely on the face and mouth cavity's hard bone and smooth muscle tissues. As a result, OMS surgeons are regarded as the dentistry profession's surgical specialities. As you might expect, most of their work is focused on surgical procedures. OMS procedures range from minor to complex surgeries. The more common and straightforward methods include dentoalveolar surgeries, for example, wisdom teeth and difficult teeth extractions, and dental implants. Generally, this procedure aims to treat disorders of the teeth and the supporting bone and soft tissues.

Operations such as craniofacial surgery for congenital disorders, treatment of malignant tumours, facial surgery and skin cancer surgeries of the head are more complex and require collaboration with other specialists. Other procedures executed in OMS include facial injury treatment. Facial injury trauma consists of the breakage or fracture of the face, jaws, mouth, neck and eye orbits. It also provides for damage to the soft tissues of the operation areas. Removal of benign and malignant tumours, reconstructive surgeries, cosmetic surgeries, treatment of congenital face defects are also part of OMS.

Invasive and non-invasive treatment of TMJ pain disorder. OMS also includes orthognathic surgery and the medical treatment of conditions around the cervicofacial area. To aid them in their work, oral and maxillofacial surgeons use the most up-to-date surgical procedures. CT and MRI scans, for example, are utilized to allow surgeons to see head and neck anatomy in three dimensions. The photos can then be edited to create virtual 3D models that aid the physician in surgery planning.
