Sinus lifts are advised sometimes to place implants. That is because there is not enough space to add the implant in the maxilla or the upper jaw bone. The following details define a sinus lift and when you should have the procedure performed.
What Is a Sinus LIft?
Sometimes getting an implant may not be all that simple if you don't have enough jaw bone to hold the implant in place. A sinus lift represents one of these times. Also known as sinus augmentation, a sinus lift makes it easier to have dental implants placed. By getting a sinus lift, you can get the implant support you need when you have lost bone in the jaw. A sinus lift enhances the amount of bone in the upper jaw and is a common bone grafting treatment for implant patients.
Who Benefits from a Sinus Lift?
If you are missing teeth in the area of the jawbone, in the back near the sinuses, you may require a sinus augmentation. Jawbone volume and teeth can be missing in the area due to gum infections, cancer, or other oral health conditions. A sinus lift may also be prescribed if the upper jaw bone is too close to the sinuses and the patient needs more space for an implant placement.
Transplanting the Bone
Basically, a sinus lift represents a bone transplant. We may transplant bone from the patient's body (autogenous bone), from a cadaver (allogenic bone), from a cow (xenograft), or use a synthetic bone grafting material. If we use an autogenous bone source, it usually is taken from another part of the body or from the mouth. Once we identify the bone source, we will accurately measure the height and width of the current bone and study the structure of the sinus.
