How Long Does it Take for a Jaw Bone Graft to Heal?

How Long Does it Take for a Jaw Bone Graft to Heal? When someone needs a bone graft for their jaw, there are plenty of questions to ask. Why do they need it, what is it and what will it do for me are a few of the questions that we hear. One of the most important things people want to know from us is how long a jaw bone graft will take to heal.

They want to know how long it will take before they can move on to the next step. While it would be nice to give a stock answer and tell them a certain amount of time, the reality is that it will vary. There are many things that go into the length of recovery time from a jaw bone graft.

The General Answer

The most general answer to how long it takes for a jaw bone graft to heal is between 2 weeks and 6 months. The problem that people have is that is a very wide range and does not take into account the different stages during the recovery process. It also does not take into account the size of the bone graft, any other issues the person getting the graft has and what can happen during the recovery time that can extend it or shorten it.

Taking into Account Different Things
The first thing to realize about the recovery is that it happens in stages. The initial recovery period is when the graft is first put in place and the site where the graft begins to heal. This generally lasts 2 to 3 weeks. After that time a person can start to return to some of the normal routines. The second part of the recovery involves the growth of bone tissue. The length of this depends on the amount of bone tissue needed. For most people, this lasts around 3 months, but can take up to 6 months.

If a person does not follow good oral hygiene habits or engages in behaviors such as smoking that are bad for the healing process, all the timelines for recovery can get longer. The best way to speed up the recovery process is to try to follow a good oral hygiene routine.
