Temporomandibular Joint disorder is not fun for anyone that suffer from it. The pain can come and go. At times the pain is overwhelming. The jaw can actually lock into place because of TMJ. People who suffer from TMJ will go to great lengths to solve the problems of TMJ. They will undergo painful procedures and take medications to deal with the symptoms of TMJ. They do not realize that they may find some help if they improve their posture. What is TMJ?In order to understand how posture can impact TMJ, it is best to understand what TMJ is. The Temporomandibular Joint is the joint that connects the jaw to the skull. It is located on both sides of the head. If the joint suffers trauma, it can fall out of alignment and this can lead to struggles with speech, bite and can cause pain. There are many different causes and treatments for TMJ. It is not something that everyone can ignore, and it is important to understand all the aspects of it. Change Your Posture Good posture takes effort. It is easy to slouch in a comfortable chair and relax, but that does not mean it is good for your body. Sitting in a slouched position will not only affect your back, it can also affect the position of your head and jaw. The slouched position can also push your head forward. That puts part of the jaw deeper into its sockets. This can lead to more problems with TMJ and can cause pain. Poor posture can also affect the muscles that work the jaw and that connect the jaw to the skull. They can cause extra tension in this area that can lead to the pain and discomfort from TMJ. There is not one thing that causes TMJ and there is not one type of treatment for it. Improving your posture is one of the ways to help manage the problems of TMJ. It is something you can fix on your own. For more information about this or any other oral health issues, contact our office to schedule an appointment. |
