Asking Questions About Sedation is Welcome Prior to Any Oral Procedure

In our office, we perform many different types of procedures on our patients every day. We consider many of these procedures as routine. For the patient undergoing the procedure, the idea that anything is routine is hard to understand.

They want to make sure they are as comfortable as possible. That is why patients prefer some type of sedation for the procedure. We encourage everyone to ask questions about what type of sedation is available, how it works or anything else they wonder about.

The Common Questions

While everyone who comes into our office is unique, they do share many of the same fears and desire to know things. There are some questions about sedation that many of our patients ask.

•	What are the different levels of sedation? This is the question we hear the most. We describe the levels of sedation as mild, moderate, deep and general anesthesia.
•	Can You Get More Than One Type of Sedation? Some people may need a stronger type of sedation but are afraid of needles. It is possible to use a mild type of sedation to help a person get over their fears.
•	How Long Does It Last? The length of time it lasts depends on the type of sedation and the amount used. Many people wonder if they can drive or go to work after the sedation. For mild and some moderate sedation this is possible. For the deeper and general anesthesia, we recommend having someone else get you home. Most people can leave soon after their procedure and allow the full effects of the sedation to wear off at home.
•	Is It Risky? Any time you use medications for sedation there is some risk involved. With the proper training and knowledge, the risks of sedation are very small.

Sedation for oral procedures can remove all the pain that people think may happen. We know it helps and welcome the questions you have to make sure it helps you.
