How Posture Influences How Much Jaw Pain You Feel

Posted on 12/20/2018 by Dr McMurray
How Posture Influences How Much Jaw Pain You FeelIf you have poor posture, you probably already know that it can cause back and neck pain. Did you know that it can also impact your jaw and pain in your jaw? Everything in your body is connected, which means your poor posture can influence your bite, your jaw joint, and affect pain from TMJ.

Posture and TMJ Disorder

Bad posture can do more than just make your TMJ disorder worse—it can actually cause TMJ problems! The temporomandibular joint or TMJ does much more than most people realize. It supports your head, which means it has as much as 30 pounds of weight on it. It also has about 35% of all of the nerve impulses in your body running through it. If your posture puts things out of alignment, it can pinch those nerves or put more pressure on this joint.

When you sit hunched over, everything moves forward. This causes your lower jaw to actually stick out a little more than normal. That can result in a bad bite, which in turn leads to TMJ disorders.

This Creates a Cycle of Pain

TMJ disorder can then cause more pain in your jaw that radiates down into your back and shoulders. You may find yourself hunching over or sitting in awkward positions just to alleviate as much of this pain as possible. That, of course, may make your jaw extend even further, making your TMJ disorder worse. This cycle, then continues, leading to more and more pain and discomfort.
