Do You Need a Sinus Lift?

Posted on 7/20/2018 by Dr McMurray
Do You Need a Sinus Lift?Getting dental implants is a great way to replace missing teeth. They are a permanent solution to the problem that helps a person recover their lost smile. While dental implants are a great solution to a problem you may have, they are not always as easy as people think.

It is possible that some work will need to be done before moving on to the dental implants. One of the procedures that you may need for dental implants is a sinus lift. Learning about what a sinus lift is and what it does is a part of the process.

What Is a Sinus Lift?

Another name for the sinus lift is a sinus augmentation. During the surgical procedure, the area around the molars and premolars of the jaw get bone added. Surgeons add bone to the area between the jaw and the maxillary sinuses. Because there is not usually enough room for the bone, the sinus membrane is lifted upwards through the sinus lift procedure.

When Do You Need It?

The back of the upper jaw does not have as much bone as other parts of the jaw. The reason for this is the anatomy of the jaw. That can make it difficult to put in implants. It is also necessary to add bone to the jaw when the bone was lost because of gum disease.

If a person has lost teeth, they may also lose bone through the process of resorption. For some people, the shape and size of the maxillary sinus may cause problems with the implant. All these issues can result in the need of a sinus lift.

Most people cannot tell if they need a sinus lift to get dental implants. An oral surgeon will evaluate the need for this procedure before they do the implants. If a person has lost bone and does not get a sinus lift, the implants are more likely to fail.
