 After oral surgery is completed, we tell our patients that swelling is expected. The type of oral surgery will determine the amount of swelling as well as your body’s ability to heal. When it comes to tooth extraction, particularly wisdom teeth removal, swelling is going to take place around the affected area.
In most cases, swelling is not present until the following day after surgery. It is important for patients to follow the proper icing instructions after surgery in order to heal and feel better. Icing After SurgeryOur patients are informed that icing after surgery is a must. To prevent swelling, icing should begin right after surgery is completed. When you arrive home, baggies filled with ice or ice packs will need to be applied to the area of surgery. The ice packs will need to be left on as long as possible during your waking hours in order to avoid swelling. Icing should be done for 24 hours after the surgery. At that time, you will no longer need to use ice. Continue to take pain medication as prescribed to feel better. Swelling should subside within a 24 hour to 48-hour time frame. Following Instructions After SurgeryBefore oral surgery is completed, each patient is provided with a list of instructions for aftercare. You want to be sure to follow these instructions to the letter. From what to eat to medication and icing the area, if you follow the instructions that we provide, you are sure to heal appropriately. It is our job to ensure that your surgery goes well. We want to provide our patients with quality and easy to follow instructions so that the healing process can begin after surgery and patients are not in too much pain or see major swelling in the area of surgery.
