Bruxism South Valley Oral and Facial Surgery CA 95123-1220
Bruxism, or the grinding and clenching of one's teeth, can do a lot of damage to your mouth, specifically your teeth. It leaves them more brittle and sensitive with minor damage, and can lead to tooth loss with larger amounts of damage.

If you don't know what signs to look for, your teeth could undergo a lot of damage before it gets caught by your dentist or oral surgeon. Some of that damage may not be repairable if you don't catch it in time. It's not worth that risk.

Damage from Bruxism to Be Aware Of

When you have bruxism, it can do a lot of damage in what seems to be a short amount of time. The most common reason that it doesn't seem like much time is because you normally don't know you are doing it early on. Once you notice the damage, it is easier to see it progress.

Waking up with a sore jaw or a feeling of pressure on your jaw can be a sign that you were clenching your jaw in your sleep. Most people don't clench their jaws intentionally. It normally happens when the person is trying to focus or trying to sleep.

Teeth that begin to crack or shift out of place is also another sign that you may be clenching your teeth. If your teeth have struggled with excess pressure for a period of time, they are bound to begin to show signs of this. This typically shows up in the form of dental cracking or chipping. Once the damage becomes extensive, it can even cause complete tooth loss.

Knowing that bruxism is not good for your teeth, it is important that you learn the signs to watch for. If you want to know more, ask your oral surgeon or your dentist.
